3 Steps to Asking “Are You Thinking About Suicide?” and What Comes Next

September is Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month

It’s natural to feel unsure or even terrified about broaching the subject of suicide, but your question could be the lifeline someone needs. Here’s a simple, compassionate framework to initiate this critical conversation, followed by guidance on how to proceed with care.

Start by expressing what you’ve observed and why you care, this grounds the conversation in concrete concern, making it less accusatory.

Example: “I’ve noticed you’ve been missing a lot of work and losing weight, and I know things have been tense at home.”

Let them know it makes sense to feel overwhelmed under current pressures.

Example: “With all that’s going on, anyone might find themselves wondering if life’s worth living.”

Be straightforward to show you’re comfortable and invested: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” or “Are you thinking about suicide?” This clarity can be validating.

An example of a complete message could be: “I’ve noticed you’ve been missing work and losing weight, given all that’s going on, it’s understandable to feel like things might be too much. Are you thinking about suicide?”

After asking, treat the conversation like any meaningful exchange, no judgment, just presence and compassion. Listen actively and empathetically. And if needed, seek help from professionals or trusted contacts. Refer them to crisis support: call or text 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

No one expects you to have all the answers. But your willingness to ask with care can be powerful. By showing concern, normalizing their feelings, and asking directly, you offer connection in a moment that could matter most. If you or someone else is in crisis, don’t hesitate to reach out to 988, or seek professional help immediately. Visit us at Serenity Tree | Anxiety Experts
