September is Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide is a topic many shy away from, yet avoiding it only feeds stigma and isolation. Opening up the conversation can save lives. Learn the facts behind common myths and learn how to recognize warning signs in those who may be struggling.

Fact: Using the word “commit” in reference to suicide reinforces negative stigma. It’s more respectful and accurate to say, “someone died by suicide.”

Myth: Talking about suicide doesn’t mean someone isn’t serious. It often means they’re overwhelmed and need someone to listen.

Myth: Asking someone if they’re suicidal doesn’t plant the idea, it can actually relieve some of the burden.

Fact: Most suicides are not impulsive acts; about 95% have been planned over time.

Myth: Not everyone who contemplates suicide is fully intent on dying; many have conflicting feelings and want to reach out for help.

Fact: Contrary to popular belief, suicide rates are highest in the spring, not winter.

Fact: Around 25% of individuals who die by suicide leave a note, which often raises more questions than it answers.

Fact: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children ages 10 to 14, highlighting the critical need for open dialogue with youth.

Some warning signs of suicide may be expressed like so: “I just want to die.” “I don’t see how things will get any better.” “They’d be better off without me.” “I want to go to sleep and not wake up.”

They may be feeling hopelessness, numbness, trapped, burdensome, or in intense psychological pain. Some observable behaviors can be withdrawing socially, substance misuse, changes in eating or sleeping habits, giving away possessions, aggression, or preparing for the end, such as gathering pills or researching methods.

Knowing the myths and facts about suicide helps dismantle stigma, while recognizing warning signs allows us to act with compassion. Prevention starts with understanding—and willingness to look deeper.
